What is the PHQ-9?
The PHQ-9 is a validated, widely used nine-item questionnaire that screens for depression and rates its severity. It’s a standard tool in GP surgeries and mental-health services worldwide.
What PHQ-9 score indicates depression?
Scores of 5, 10, 15 and 20 mark the cut-offs for mild, moderate, moderately severe and severe depression. A score of 10 or more usually prompts further assessment. It rates severity — it doesn’t diagnose.
