The GAD-7 (Generalised Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale) — a validated, public-domain screening questionnaire widely used in primary care.

Frequently asked questions

What is the GAD-7?

The GAD-7 is a validated, widely used seven-item questionnaire that screens for generalised anxiety and rates its severity. It’s a standard tool in GP surgeries and mental-health services.

What GAD-7 score indicates anxiety?

Scores of 5, 10 and 15 mark the cut-offs for mild, moderate and severe anxiety. A score of 10 or more usually prompts further assessment. It’s a guide to severity, not a diagnosis.

Could my anxiety actually be ADHD or autism?

Sometimes, yes. Anxiety frequently sits on top of — or is mistaken for — undiagnosed ADHD or autism, especially in adults who’ve masked for years. If that resonates, our ADHD and autism screens are a useful next look.
